My paintings are representational, usually figurative or still life. I depict environments, people, and animals that are meaningful to me. Relationships with my family members and friends have many layers and deep personal histories. I focus on their likeness and characteristics, and my experience of them informs decision making throughout the painting process. Environments are part of the portrait, giving clues about the figures’ personalities. While working, I listen to the painting, making adjustments in response to elements that develop. The visual story through composition and subject matter, and the painted object concerning surface texture, color, and tonal relationships are both important. It is my goal to have the visual story and the painted object be strong enough that one can appreciate them independently; however, together they strengthen and enforce the overall viewing experience.
